You can do almost everything but most of the people also use mods so you can really do anything

That is an add on pack(mod) they are easy to download and they make the game much more fun. Also, if you know programming, you can make your own creatures and climates.
Just make sure to download "modloader" first, because it allows other mods to work.
Basically, anything is possible.
